Stoke Socialist Party members visited striking Birmingham bin workers today at the Perry Barr depot.
We went to offer our backing for their five week old dispute and to ask how we could build support for their struggle against a Labour council who have made a political choice to attack their jobs, pay and safety conditions.
Workers are certainly in a mood to fight against these attacks. Every bin worker we spoke to was adamant that they will continue their struggle.
Many are extremely angry because they have previously gone along with some changes that have only benefited the bosses. Now they have clearly had enough.
They have already received significant support from FBU fire fighters, RMT rail workers and many others
Socialist Party members in Birmingham have backed the bin workers strike from the beginning. This has included 3 bulletins and a flyer for the public which you can read here
What you can do:
- Join the “Support the Brum Bin Strike” FB page
- If you are in a union get your branch to pass a motion asking Jeremy Corbyn to remind Labour councillors that they were not elected to attack their own worker’s jobs, pay and conditions. Also get your branch to send a message of support to the bin workers and a donation to their hardship fund.
- Labour Party members should also be challenging Labour councillors to defend their own workers jobs, pay and conditions instead of attacking them.
- Whether or not you are in a trade union or the Labour Party etc you can also send an individual donation or get your local residents group or other community groups to do the same.
Please send message of support to firstname.lastname@example.org
and donations can be sent to Unite the Union, 9-17 Victoria Street, West Bromwich, West Midlands, B70 8HX
